Confession of a Theistic Evolutionist

Okay it’s time for an unburdening, a coming out or whatever you wish to call it. I may lose friends. I can’t control that. I won’t beg anyone to stay.

I am a theistic evolutionist.

Look it up here:

That means that I don’t accept the idea that everything that is exists within a 12,000yr bubble or that dinosaur fossils were buried by God to test our faith. I tend to treat such ideas as part of a Christian flat earth.

If you dig hard enough in the Bible you can find a verse to proof-text whatever idea you want. I’ve been a Christian for 30 years. In that time I’ve heard a lot of ideas on different subjects. Some I was able to accept and still do. Others I may or may not have tried to accept and at some point they began to insult my intelligence and I have rejected them. While I have a very strong respect for the Bible, it is not an object of worship for me. I do not believe we are called to that. It’s a form of idolatry. There is no 4th person in the Trinity.

Scripture tells us that the Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. (Psalm 24:1, my proof-text) To me that means that all this stuff out there, the things that the orbiting telescopes keep opening up to us, all of it belongs to God. We’re in the 2nd decade of the 21st century and I have a real problem speaking of the Creator and his creation in such limited language. Oral tradition exists because the world changes. New things and ways of doing things are discovered and it’s not all written down in the Bible. So when I think about the wonders of creation, I’m thinking about The Sea of Galilee, Lake Superior, the Redwoods, El Capitan, Mt. McKinley, the Petrified Forest, Devil’s Postpile National Monument, Martian Duststorms, the Crab Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Trifid Nebula, the rest of Messier’s and the New General Catalogues and whatever else our technologically enhanced eyes and ears show us.

I have felt this way all this time. I just haven’t talked about it with everyone. So if you’re one that didn’t know and you’re irritated with me that this is how you’re learning this. Well I’m sorry about that. We probably haven’t talked in a while.

As far as eschatology and end times prophecy and all that go, creation, salvation, the “end of the world” and the rest of it are all up to God. I gave up on the manic Israel clock watch a long time back. It was giving me a headache and upsetting my stomach.
