In this article from AP, workers have been pumping over 3,000,000 gallons of water into the Pacific Ocean to make room for more highly radioactive water.
This less radioactive water is up to 500 times the legal limit for radiation….But the radiation should dilute quickly and not affect the safety of seafood in the area.
Did we all just flunk the high school exit exams? Am I going to need a Geiger counter at the sushi bar? Should I keep one in my backpack as well as with the meat thermometer? How quick is “quickly?” Should I take the official word as to when it’s safe to eat the fish? Or should I wait maybe five or six years.
Dilution does not mean absorption. It doesn’t mean the radiation is gone after some time has passed. It just means that the plant water has mixed with the non-contaminated water and spread over the planet raising radiation levels in all sea water.
Those of us who consume canned seafood need to acquire as much of it as possible now. Same goes for sea salt, and seaweed. It’s hard to be optimistic about the near future.
